According to a new research, it is said that at least 15 minutes of moderate to vigorous workout every day will help one to live longer up to 60 years of age. Those who made a swift from doing nothing to minimal physical activity experienced huge benefits, say researchers.

Most of the health benefits reaped by being so is reduction of the risk of heart disease or stroke. It was also observed that the risk of death due to various causes was greater in older women than in older men. Researchers also add that there were good health benefits out of working out 150 minutes per week, but most people found it tough to achieve this target.

The research team included researchers from University of Lyon, University of Burgundy and Jean Monnet University in France. These researchers aimed at knowing whether regular activity lesser than this level has any impact on the longevity in the elderly. The research studies that were published up to February this year studied the risk of death associated with physical activity in those aged above 60.

Physical activity was measured in Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) minutes which is the amount of energy in calories. This MET keeps increasing as the individual works out every week.

A moderate level of physical activity will give rise to 3 to 5.9 MET minutes while it will be 6 in case of vigorous activity. The risk of death was calculated in four different categories based on the weekly physical activity which are inactive, low (1 to 499), medium (500 to 999) and high (1000+).

Out of all the 835 relevant studies, nine of those were suitable for this analysis. This involved 122417 participants all of whom were monitored for about 10 years. During this period of analysis, 18122 participants died.
