The price of tomatoes has touched Rs. 180 per kg in Tamil Nadu. Tomatoes were sold at Rs. 150/- per kg in the wholesale market at Koyambedu and Rs. 200/- per kg in the retail trade! It is learned that the price of tomatoes is likely to go up further as the quantity of arrivals has decreased!

In this scenario, a review meeting on the status of tomato prices was conducted yesterday (Monday, 31st July), presided over by the State Minister for Cooperation of the Tamil Nadu Government, K. Periakaruppan.

After the review meeting, the Tamil Nadu State Minister for Cooperation, K. Periakaruppan, shared with the press:

"The price of tomatoes has been on an increasing trend since last month! The State Government of Tamil Nadu, unlike other state governments, has been making an effort to restrict the price increase of tomatoes.

In the first phase, tomatoes are arranged to be sold at Rs. 60/- per kg in 67 Farm Green Shops for a week.

Afterwards, in the next step, tomatoes were arranged to be sold at reasonable prices in 111 Fair Price Shops, especially in cities, including the Chennai Metro City."

With the reduced growth of tomatoes, the state government is buying the tomatoes at increased prices and then distributing the same through the Bank Cooperative stores and the Fair Price Shops!

After the Chief Minister`s Order to increase the seal`s quantum, we expanded the sales to 300 shops in the third phase.

With the increased price of tomatoes being an acute issue in several states, 300 fair-price shops are not sufficient. With the emphatic advice from the Chief Minister, it has been arranged to sell tomatoes in at least 500 Fair Price Shops from today (Tuesday, 2nd August).
