Chennai Enjoys Relief as Vegetable Prices Slightly Decrease with Increased Supply

In a temporary respite for consumers, vegetable prices, including tomatoes, ginger, and small onions, have marginally decreased across Chennai. The surge in supply from neighbouring states has contributed to this decline, as production saw a boost with adequate yields in the third crop cultivation.
However, this relief may be short-lived as traders at the Koyambedu wholesale market express concern over the recent downpour in Karnataka, which has damaged crops and might lead to a subsequent increase in rates. The past month witnessed soaring prices due to erratic weather patterns, but the supply of vegetables had started normalizing until the recent setback.
Currently, tomatoes are being sold for Rs 90 per kg, and small onions are priced at Rs 150 per kg. Traders warn that the prices are likely to surge again due to the crop damages caused by heavy rains in neighbouring states.
The abnormal surge in vegetable prices has also impacted sales by 10 to 15 percent in the city. During the Tamil month of Aadi, people usually purchase a limited volume of vegetables, but the increased rates have worsened the situation for traders.

- Green chillies - Rs 60
- Beans - Rs 30
- Broad beans - Rs 50 - Rs 60
