Now, there is a huge increase in the number of fever cases in the Chennai hospitals and this is making many to worry. People across all age groups are getting affected by fever.

It is important to mention here that mostly people in Chennai have dengue fever, viral fever, suspected brain fever and Covid-19 infection etc. There is some confusion among the people now regarding the fever whether it is due to flu or Covid.

In the last 2 years, the flu season was controlled in Chennai and this was due to safe behaviours plus lockdowns, wearing facemasks and maintaining physical distance etc. It is true that this has led to low levels of exposure and natural immunity within the population.

According to a consultant paediatrician and pulmonologist Dr. Somu Sivabalan of Dr. Rela Institute and Medical Centre it was confirmed that relaxation in the rules or procedure followed could lead to significant increase in the influenza cases.

After the recent rains, the number of influenza cases has been increasing in Chennai. Various common symptoms reported now are chills, fever, common cold, reduced appetite, bitter taste buds, lower respiratory tract infections etc.

According to preventive medicine specialist Dr. Vaibhav Suresh of Fortis Hospital, normally there would be an increase in the number of fever cases in September and October after the rains. He added that it was necessary to take the flu vaccine at this time of the year. Now, the overall Covid-19 cases have come down but many doctors were of the view that many cases do not get reported due to co-infections etc.

It was revealed by a senior consultant Dr. Ashwin Karuppan belonging to Gleneagles Global Health City that in the last one month the Covid-19 cases have come down in Chennai and this has led to the residents not following the safety measures. He shed light on how many residents did not take flu vaccines in the last 2 to 3 years due to the Coronavirus pandemic infection. He concluded that senior citizens, kids and those with co-morbid conditions etc must take flu vaccination compulsorily to avoid getting influenza fever.
