On the 10 acres of land at Vallam Vadagal in Kancheepuram district, TIDCO or Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation has got plans to set up an integrated testing complex for drones etc. This TIDCO is a nodal agency for defence corridor is a known fact.
It is superb to note that the integrated complex would consist of Greenfield testing infrastructure including electromagnetic compatibility or electromagnetic interference EMI-EMC testing. This was brought out by a source. It was explained by a senior officer belonging to the industries department that in the design and manufacturing process of electronic devices testing is an important step.
The sources mentioned that the state of TN has got many electronics manufacturing and design focussed industries. It added that TN has got a huge potential for EMI/EMC and communication testing labs. It is noteworthy that the focus would be on electronic warfare and UAV or unmanned aerial vehicles etc.
The integrated testing complex would play its part in attracting investments to TN from global and domestic aerospace and defence original equipment manufacturers OEM. Over the next 10 years, Indian defence forces could buy unmanned aerial vehicles worth $ 3 billion from the domestic companies. As per the sources it was clear that it would be in addition to the expected high growth in domestic, civilian UAV market etc.
By the year 2030, the total market size for electronic warfare systems in India is expected to reach Rs 600 crores to Rs 700 crores. In the same year, the current market size of the testing industry that is estimated at Rs 130 crores to Rs 170 crores would touch Rs 200 crores to Rs 230 crores.
The bitter fact is that there are few facilities for conducting defence electronics tests in India but there are no dedicated testing facilities available in private as well as in the public sector for testing MSMEs and other industry players.
Across several industries like electronics, telecommunication, commercial aerospace and space etc, EMI as well as EMC are performed. Point is that the testing equipment for EMI and EMC for defence applications are complex and specific.
