If you have come across the Old Tambaram Lake, then you would have noticed that the lake has been in poor condition without any restoration.

It is really shocking to mention here that this lake has remained lifeless for nearly 30 years without proper renovation. This despite the fact that the residents belonging to West Tambaram have been constantly demanding for the restoration of the lake.

There is no proper sewage connection in the locality and waste water gets discharged into the lake leading to contamination of the groundwater. This was according to some residents.

It was brought out by a resident that agriculture has been going on here for many years now. He added that when 200 feet road was laid their lands were acquired for widening of the road.

He then spoke about how the lake has not been restored for many years now and how the water body has been facing oxygen depletion due to uncontrolled growth of water hyacinth. It is learnt that ecological pressure, plastic waste and untreated sewage is let into the lake. The groundwater has been affected in the locality.

Truth is that the Old Tambaram Lake has become the breeding ground for mosquitoes, rodents etc plus the water has become unfit for drinking. In addition, the foul smell from the lake has been making the lives of many difficult.

Almost 25 acres of the lake has been encroached and the govt has not taken any action till now. This was mentioned by some residents. It was revealed by another resident that in the past there was no water logging in the monsoon season but now things have become worse because of illegal buildings present in the water catchment leading to flooding.

The government hasn`t yet given its approval regarding the restoration of the lake and this was as per the water resources department or WRD.
