What happened to the COVID safety norms during counting of votes in Chennai?

The Covid-19 safety norms have gone for a toss now in Chennai and in TN!!

On Sunday, 2nd May 2021, counting of votes took place in several centres in Chennai and TN. Truth is that there was violation of Covids-19 safety norms in many centres. At almost all the centres, both booth agents and party representatives have flouted the norms and this has caught the attention of many. Booths and dining areas also saw agents in huge numbers.

Earlier, DMK chief Mr. M.K. Stalin has requested the DMK workers and others to follow Covid-19 safety norms but the DMK victory was celebrated with the bursting of crackers at the Anna Arivalayam by the party workers and others and the safety norms were flouted. Only a few people wore face masks. For the sake of not controlling the crowd, an inspector was also suspended.

Inspite of providing hand sanitizers, PPE kits, masks and shields, just few used them and others did not bother to use them. It is known that Anna University in Guindy, Chennai was also a counting centre and yesterday both agents as well as party representative crowded in the counting room there creating issues. In the counting room for Saidapet constituency, just one door was left open and the party workers asked for more doors and windows to be opened.

Hot weather was cited as the main reason for many not using the PPE kits etc that were provided to them at the counting centres. Inspite of several requests made by the officials about wearing facemasks, face shield and maintain distancing etc, the booth agents did not bother at the counting centres in places like Alandur, Sriperumbudur, Uthiramerur etc.

It must be noted that the officials at Pudukottai counting centre in TN did not ask about the Covid-19 negative certificate or the vaccination certificate from the agents. In Tiruppur, many created issues yesterday at the counting centres by not following socials distancing norms etc. Compliance with wearing face masks was high and many agents wore PPE kits improperly also. Information is that the counting halls at 4 counting centres in Madurai were full of booth agents and candidates.
