The reopening of semi-wholesale shops at Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex or KWM could reduce the rates of certain vegetables this week. Truth is that in the wholesale market in Chennai, the prices of onions and carrots are likely to reduce this week by Rs 10 per kg. It is well known that this important market in Chennai has been shut down since April to contain the spread of Covid-19 infection.

This week, onions would be available at Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg. Last week it was sold at Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg are well known. Likewise, the carrot prices would decrease by Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg. It must be noted that the prices of other veggies would remain the same.

Increase in the arrivals was the real reason behind the drop in the prices of certain veggies in the Koyambedu market this week. This was according to Mr. V.R. Soundararajan, former member of market management committee of KWMC and a wholesale trader. He added that this has been the usual trend for the veggies post deepavali for 15 days. The fact is that on an average this market received around 400 truckloads of vegetables
