Presently, Rs 10 is being collected as the amount for the platform ticket in the railway stations in Chennai is known.

On Tuesday, the order was issued by the Chennai railway division to increase the platform ticket rate from Rs 10 per head to Rs 50 per head in 3 stations like Tambaram, Egmore and Chennai Central. The aim of this was to restrict the movement of the people at select railway stations in Chennai. Point is this temporary price increase of the platform tickets would be there till 31st March.

As per Mr R. Harikrishnan, divisional commercial manager, Chennai Railway Division, it is clear that this hike in the platform ticket would prevent the spread of Coronavirus issue to a certain extent as not many people would buy a ticket at such rate. It is well known that the Union government has been taking many steps t restrict unnecessary gathering of people to prevent spreading of COVID-19.

The 3 important Chennai railway stations mentioned above have got maximum footfall and hence the order was issued to increase the platform ticket rate in these stations. This was confirmed by Mr B. Guganesan, chief public relations officer of the southern railway.

He later spoke about how in suburban railway stations like Mambalam and Guindy (these stations have maximum footfalls) had just the passengers, whereas the 3 above-said stations like Tambaram, Egmore and Central stations had non-travellers too and they gather in huge numbers. This was the reason for the increase in the platform ticket rates at these 3 important stations.
