New reservoir across Orathur soon

The state government has announced yesterday (Friday) that a reservoir is likely to be built across Orathur. This will be constructed as a tributary to Adyar River. It will have total of 1.3tmcft storage capacity. This is to bring cheer among Chennai suburban areas. In areas close to Orathur village lying within Sriperumbudur Taluk, this canal will help in coping with water supply demands and also manage flood mitigation.

These suburban regions were badly damaged during the floods back in 2015 when flush of water from Chembarambakkam reservoir hit the Adyar river.

During the assembly, in his note about this, O. Panneerselvam, the Chief Minister and Finance Minister said it is imperative to take a permanent mitigation work in regions that are prone to flood, and prevent the area from further flooding.

As there are fallow lands available and with the feasibility of decades-old anicut in Orathur, Orathur tank, and Arambakkam tank, this new reservoir can be constructed at a cost of Rs 60 crore. As per plans by the public works department, earthen dams of height of 8m embankment are to be constructed, and it shall have cut-off trench and revetment. There is also going to be inter-basin transfer canal for the Padappai and Manimangalam tanks via the Ammanambakkam tank. This will prevent flood of 150mcft. This will double up the storage capacity at the Padappai tank and Manimangalam tank.

With the construction of new reservoir, the overall stress imposed on the suburban regoins of the city like Pallavaram, Anakaputhur and Pammal will get largely cut down. These areas are notably hit by drinking water scarcity, say PWD sources.
