Heavy traffic congestion in J.N Road in Chennai due to delay in the infrastructural projects

Sometimes certain things meant for some important purpose might end up causing issues. It is now revealed that 2 infrastructural projects on the Jawaharlal Nehru road that were supposed to decongest traffic have become issues for the motorists due to time overrun.

It is worth mentioning here that the delay in completion of 2 key projects grade separator near Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus or CMBT on Jawaharlal Nehru Road at Koyambedu and the second phase of the flyover at Retteri junction has caused heavy traffic congestion now and has thrown the traffic out of control. A regular commuter to Koyambedu from Egmore expressed his unhappiness about the 30 minutes time taken to reach CMBT from MMDA signal on Jawaharlal Nehru Road.

He revealed that due to the ongoing work for the grade separator, the traffic is terrible during the peak hours of time. Since the work began, the movement of the vehicles has slowed down here.

It is known that the tender was awarded on 29th September 2015 and the bidder must finish the works within 33 months as per the terms of the tender that was issued by the state highways department. The month of July in the year 2018 was the deadline and now the work has been delayed for 7 months. It must be taken into account that Rs 93.50 crores project would ease the traffic congestion on the arterial road plus it would eliminate the signal at the Kaliyamman Koil Street- Jawaharlal Road Junction. The amazing piece of news is the vehicular density at this junction is 2 lakh PCU or passenger car units every day and this was estimated by the department.

During the busy hours of time, 2 intersections near the CMBT and Kaliyamman Koil Street lead to the vehicles getting piled up. Important point to be noted is some passengers miss their buses to districts in this intersection due to heavy traffic congestion. The delay in the construction of the grade separator is now creating issues in accessing CMBT for many. The news gathered was just 45 percent of work has been completed till now.
