Power connections not restored in the delta districts of TN

Cyclone Gaja destroyed the coastal and central districts in the state of TN and nearly fifty days have passed now. On Friday, 4th January 2019, chief minister of TN, Mr. E. Palaniswami, spoke about how the government is yet to restore the 78,000 power connections that were damaged in the Cauvery delta regions. It is now revealed that as many as 66.56 lakh connections has been restored by the state run power supply, Tangedco and this has been possible by the help got from several thousand workers belonging to the neighbouring states.

The energy department did not play its role well and it had not restored the power supply in many areas. This was confirmed by Mr. Mohammed Abubacker of IUML. The chief minister spoke about how just 1% of areas in delta regions has not seen power restoration and how this was mainly on the agricultural lands. He then explained about the importance of manpower and said to reach every site it required 3 to 4 furlong. He threw light on the nature of the soil that was present and said the soil was responsible for the delay in the installation of poles.  Mr. E. Palaniswamy then shifted his focus on the farmers and said they were also the reason behind the delay as they have standing crops in the region. There were few demands made by the opposition leader Mr, M.K. Stalin regarding the government waiving loans taken by the farmers, fishermen, students etc belonging to the affected areas in TN.

The chief minister of Tamil Nadu later detailed about governments extensive relief work and the compensation amount that was given to the affected sectors. The important point is the state had requested the centre for enhanced relief amount of Rs 2709 crores for temporary restoration and Rs 15190 crores for permanent restoration. An amount of Rs 1146 crores has been released by the centre from the NDRF or National Disaster Relief Fund and the state government had allocated Rs 2301.41 crores for various departments sp that relief and restoration could be taken up. The chief minister of TN brought huge cheers on many AIADMK members when he mentioned that damaged FRP or fibre reinforced plastic boats and nets would get enhanced relief amount of Rs 15 lakh. It is amazing to mention that the state was well prepared and by this it was able to evacuate as many as 82,000 people ahead of the cyclone landfall. Human loss was reduced by this evacuation is known.
