Rejuvenation of water bodies in north and east Chennai

The water bodies present in the places of north and west Chennai have been neglected for decades. The superb news is the restoration or rejuvenation of these water bodies is going on now. Focus of the EFI or Environmental Foundation of India has been shifted towards these ponds present in north and west Chennai. This foundation has been playing huge role in the revival of water bodies present in the city of Chennai is already known to us. There are as many as 15 Ponds or water bodies present in Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts and these water bodies are in dire need of restoration.
Founder of EFI, Mr. Arun, spoke about the restoration of 17 ponds including the ponds present in the northern and western Chennai city in the last year. He expressed his happiness regarding the role played by the local bodies and community participation in restoring the water bodies in the above places. Restoration of ponds present in places like Minjur, Theeyambakkam near Manali, Kullapan Nagar in Madhavaram and Vinayagapuram near Retteri has been completed successfully. Mr. Arun then shed light on how many of these water bodies have been neglected for decades. He added that the Minjur pond has turned into a space for dumping trash. He explained about the role played by the volunteers and spoke about how they removed trash and plugged sewage outfalls. Deepening of the water body and fencing it were also done by the volunteers. EFI founder later highlighted that their organisation would soon be involved in the restoration of 15 ponds present in places like Arrakulam, Vairavankulam, Mandapamkuttai in the Ambattur zone plus in places like Aluvancheri near Porur, Thalambur and Egattur along the Rajiv Gandhi Salai. There are advantages of restoration of ponds such as improving the building capacity to handle localised flooding and drought plus preventing soil/ water contamination etc.
