The University Grants Commission (UGC) has formed a panel grouping it as 11-member national level fee regulation committee for the purpose of regulating the fee structure for MBBS courses in deemed universities. On Tuesday the standing counsel of UGC, PR Gopinathan stated the formation of panel to the first bench of chief justice Indira Banerjee and justice P T Asha.

The panel will be headed by the New Delhi AIIMS former director RC Deka with other members from various concerns of medicine and the related institutions. The procedural development of the hearing comes after 18 days after Madras High court capped MBBS fee for deemed universities of Tamil Nadu at Rs 13 lakh.

The court made it clear that the announced amount would remain in force until UGC forms the committee to conclude the entire fee structure and model for deemed universities in the state.

Chennai based Sri Ramachandra Medical College was allowed by the Supreme Court to collect Rs 22 lakh as annual tuition fee for this academic year until the committee finalizes the fee for deemed universities. However the court has ordered the committee to submit the decided fee for deemed universities before October 31, 2018.
