University of Madras affiliated colleges to admit candidates who have taken a break

The University of Madras will permit affiliated colleges to admit candidates who took a break during their degree course to complete it. For each such student admitted under the supernumerary category, the college will have to pay Rs. 10,000 for UG courses and Rs. 20,000 for PG courses.
Speaking about this, a senior office bearer at the University said, The university norms require students to have at least 75 per cent attendance in a semester to appear for exams. Students with 50 to 65 per cent attendance can take the exam the next semester after paying a fine. But those with less than 50 per cent attendance in a semester are not sufficiently ready to take the exam. The redo option was considered because of representation from the students.
A representative of autonomous colleges said, The fee was prohibitive and would discourage students from completing the course. A representative from a government arts and science college said already colleges were charging a fee of Rs. 900 from students apart from the exam fee, which was difficult to pay for economically backward students.
The University official said, The aim was to permit genuine students complete their coursework. We do not want colleges to encourage drop outs and increase the number of seats. We have such high fee to discourage colleges from seeking the supernumerary seats. If the college is willing, classes can be held in summer for the students who can then take the exam in July.
