Dr, Ambedkar Government Law college to be shifted to Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur

The Chennai Law College, with a historic tradition 126 years old, is being shifted to Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur.
The new college will be of international standards with digital laboratories and a hi-tech library with facilities to have 2000 readers in its complex.
Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College was founded by the British in the year 1891 at the Chennai Parry’s Corner and has been functioning in the Chennai High Court complex. This has the privilege of being the 2nd oldest college in the country.
Originally named ‘Madras Law College’, the name was changed later in the year 1990 as ‘Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College’.
The architecture of the college building complex was designed by Henry Irvin as a representation of the prevailing amity between the Hindu and Muslim communities. The building is 126 years’ old.
The college has the high prestigious record of having many illustrious students - Pathanchali Sastry and P. Sadasivam who were Chief Justices, 37 Supreme Court Lawyers including V. R. Krishna Aiyar, over 1000 High Court judges, central ministers including P. Chidambaram, State Chief Ministers including Kotla Vijaya Bhaskara Reddy, C. Sankaran Nair, a former President of the Indian National Congress and many former and present ministers and government officials.
Following the recommendations suggested by a committee headed by Justice Shanmugam when sudden violence broke out in the Law College in the year 2008, the courses offered by the college were divided into 2 groups – 3-year course and 5-year course. with the construction of huge complex college buildings away from the Chennai Metro City in Pusuppakkam in Kanchipuram district and Pattaraiperumbudur in Thiruvallur district at a cost of Rs. 117 Crores.
These 2 colleges will function as per the rules and regulations of the All India Bar Council and will be of international standards. With a view to improving the quality, the college complex will have smart classrooms, the latest library accommodating over 2000 readers studying Law-related books, a digital lab with a facility to analyse historical judgments made worldwide, a model court, language training courses for both Tamil and English medium students, a video hall accommodating 500 students, an auditorium housing 1000 students/audience, indoor and outdoor stadiums, separate hostels for men and women, special facilities for the differently-abled individuals,
In order to honour the old Chennai Law College, the 2 new law Colleges are named as `Chennai Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College – Pudupakkam’ and `Chennai Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College – Pattaraiperumbudur’.
Consultative meetings are being held by the state law minister C. V. Shanmugam with the state government officials regarding inauguration of these 2 Law Colleges in the coming academic year.
