The Tamil Nadu government is planning to distribute Amma bio-fertilisers to farmers. In 2018-19, the agriculture department will distribute 3,000 metric tonnes of carrier-based bio-fertilisers and six lakh litres of liquid bio-fertilisers.

The bio-fertiliser scheme is being implemented by the Agriculture Department for the past 20 years. The government will package it as Amma bio-fertiliser in memory of late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and distribute it to farmers. The Agriculture Department already runs 22 bio-fertiliser production units with an annual production capacity of 3,000 MT of carrier-based bio-fertilisers, which are distributed in 200 g packets.

The liquid bio-fertilisers have a longer shelf life, 12-24 months, and are produced in 12 units with a production capacity of 6 lakh litres per annum. In 2016,17, 2,999 MT of carrier-based and 2.71 lakh litre of liquid bio-fertilisers were produced and distributed, according to the Agriculture Department’s policy note.

According to an agriculture officer, The interaction between the beneficial living organisms and their environment is crucial for a plant’s health. It is only a supplement to the inorganic fertilisers as we can’t replace them altogether. The soil is enriched with microbes. Also, the government is taking efforts to reinforce organic plant health by using bio-control agents and parasites for the control of pests and diseases.
