Present in the southern part of Chennai, Pallikaranai is a superb residential place is known to us. It was in the year 2011 this Pallikaranai became part of the corporation of Chennai. Pallikaranai is also famous for being the last surviving marsh land in Chennai. It is known that dumping of garbage, rapid urbanisation is going on in this Pallikaranai for quite some time and inspite of these the marshland here has survived somehow. It is now revealed that the marshland is slowly dying.

Water body in Pallikaranai has now got second life thanks to the High court of Madras. It must be noted that because of the High Court’s intervention, burning of the garbage on the marshland was stopped and encroachment was also removed.

The latest news is a see through barrier would be put so that the marshland could be safe and protected. It is worthy to note that the forest department is making this see through barrier and as a result of this the remaining water spread area would be protected.

V. Karunapriya who is chief conservator of forests and Chennai circle conservator in-charge shared her thoughts. She spoke about the 30m stretch on the Velachery main road that was identified for model see through barrier. She hinted that the work that started 2 weeks back is completed now.

This see through barrier has been inspected by the officials and it is now brought out that the whole marsh land would have barrier for 1600 m and that would be superb.  Couple of years ago the marshland was taken over when widening of the Velachery main road took place and now this see through barrier would prevent any further taking over of the marshland here.

Mr K.V. Sudhakar who is Madras Naturalists Society president felt happy that the marshland would be protected by this barrier.
