Nationwide doctors strike today

Posted on: 02/Jan/2018 10:08:20 AM
The Indian Medical Association, IMA, has called for a 12 hour nationwide strike that will be in force between 6 am and 6 pm. The doctors are protesting the National Medical Commission Bill.

According to the doctors, the Bill promotes crosspathy (those who have studied alternate medicine can practice allopathy) and eases procedures for private medical colleges. Says an IMA office bearer, Only emergency cases and those already admitted will be given treatment. The Out-Patient Departments (OPD) won’t function. The National Medical Council, as proposed in the Bill, is not acceptable to us. The IMA has labelled the Bill as anti-poor and anti-people, and it makes the system prone to corruption. The Bill seeks to replace the Medical Council of India (MCI), the apex body for the medical fraternity since 1934, and form a new National Medical Council. A majority of the new council members will be government - appointed. Several aspects of the Bill are problematic.

The Bill has also done away with permissions needed to start a medical college, and allows private medical colleges to increase undergraduate and postgraduate seats on their own. Says an IMA member, Colleges will have to pay a massive fine, that could be anything between Rs 5 crore and Rs 100 crore. With such options, the Bill is simply making way for corruption. The Bill also allows private medical colleges to decide the fee for 60% of their seats, which will increase the cost of medical education.
