More truckloads of vegetable arrive - tomato prices down

Generally, daily truckloads of a variety of vegetables reach the wholesale vegetable market in Chennai, Koyambedu from other districts of the state as well as the states of Andhra and Karnataka.
With the onset of the intense winter and snowfall season, there has been a good harvest and more quantum of vegetables are depatched from the various places to the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale vegetable market.
Until recent times, only 400 truckloads of vegetable used to arrive daily. Presently, there are 550 truckloads of vegetables arriving at Koyambedu. Because of the excess quantity, the prices of vegetables have come down steeply.
Tomato arrives from Madanapalli, Punganur, Oddipalli, Pazhamaineri, and Adhoni from Andhra state and Srinivasapuram, Sinthamani, and Kolar from Karnataka state and Krishnagiri, and its neighbouring places of Veppnapalli, Theni, and Oddanchathiram from other Tamil Nadu districts.
Tomato, which used to arrive in 50 truckloads, has now started arriving at 80 truckloads daily.
Earlier, the wholesale dealers sold tomato at Rs. 15 to Rs. 20 per kg. Now, with the increased arrival, the tomato is being sold at Rs. 5 to Rs. 8 per kg.
Other vegetable prices
- Beans, which was sold at Rs. 40 per kg, is now being sold at Rs. 15 per kg.
- Broad beans, which sold at Rs. 50 per kg, is now sold at Rs. 20 per kg.
- Cabbage, which sold at Rs. 30 per kg, is now sold at Rs. 10 per kg.
- Bottle gourd, which sold at Rs. 15 per kg, is now sold at Rs. 7 per kg.
- Radish, which sold at Rs. 20 per kg, now sells at Rs. 8 per kg.
- Chow chow, which sold at Rs. 30 per kg, is now sold at Rs. 10 per kg.
The traders informed that the prices of the vegetables will be at this level until the month of February.
