Light rain for Chennai, no heavy showers for at least a week

Posted on: 17/Nov/2017 11:27:21 AM
Chennai rains had wreaked way too much havoc over the region. In fact, the month of November has been very rainy for the city wherein the city has witnessed two episodes of rainfall in just two weeks. One of them was witnessed during the beginning of the month while the other took place during the second week of November.

Three-digit rains were witnessed, and many parts of the city remained waterlogged. Not only this, schools and offices were also closed for some time. However, the intensity of rains has reduced over Chennai for the past 24 hours. Only light rains have been occurring over some parts.

In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Wednesday, Nungambakkam observatory recorded a mere 0.2 mm of rains while only traces of rains were witnessed over the city.

Until 9:00 am in the morning, light drizzle was observed over Chennai. Thereafter, sky has become clear and rains have taken a backseat.

Currently, the ongoing Northeast Monsoon will affect the weather patterns over Chennai. Apart from that, no weather system is over Chennai. The depression which had given rains over Chennai is over Coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh and will move away weakening further.

Therefore, northeasterly winds will again start blowing over Chennai. This is a typical feature during Northeast Monsoon. Due to this, scattered light rains are expected over Chennai during the next 2 to 3 days. The good news is that now, for at least a week, heavy rains will not appear over Chennai due to the absence of any weather system in proximity of the region.
