How to capture portrait pictures without sumptuous phones like iPhone 8?

At the time of launch of iPhone 7 Plus in 2016, Apple boasted about the dual camera set up feature to capture exclusive portrait pictures. Since its very launch, all the other handset makers were avid about the trend of using either cameras of a smartphone to capture perfect portrait pictures. The trend has spread to such an extent that selfie-obsessed smartphone users keep taking multiple selfies every day with the dual camera phone. And they will entice the others to buy such dual camera smartphone. But the million dollar question is whether you actually need one!

In the beginning of October, Google had launched Pixel 2. It comes with a single camera setup and delivers classic portrait pictures with the front and rear cameras. Ultimately, it proves that a fine bit of thinking is all that you need to capture such classic pics. However, since the period of launch of cameras on earth, there are little tricks with depth of field that you can ply with to get images as good as those out of dual cameras.

What is a portrait photo?
Portrait picture is one where the subject is in the prominence using depth of field effects. In dual camera phones, either lenses are used to capture the foreground and background individually. These are then fused during post-processing. If your ultimate aim is to capture the subject, you may verily rely on your cameras inability to take snaps of objects that are fast moving at a distance.

So, without any kind of hardware modification to your smartphone, how do you capture a portrait picture with ease?
  • Open the Camera app on your smartphone and opt for Selfie camera mode
  • Firmly hold the phone such that you feel comfortable to tap the shutter button.
  • Go on and spin on your feet like a top. Right while spinning, click on the shutter button. Well, spinning on a rolling chair may help you with this step.
  • On clicking, open the gallery and find a beautiful portrait selfie with blurred background.
  • If you are confident of capturing image with the rear camera while spinning, then go ahead.
Though this is not the smartest way of capturing a portrait photo, particularly in public places, you get portrait pictures with blurred background where you can retain the focus on yourself without wanting to burn a hole in your pocket, buying high-end smartphones with dual camera sensors. The depth of field of the photo cannot be edited after clicking, to note.

So, if you have had a thought of getting a brand new sumptuous smartphone just to taste the flavors of portrait mode pictures, your options are not just iPhone 7, OnePlus 5 or Galaxy Note 8, but your existing smartphone is already one that can get you decent portrait pictures.
