Firefighting Department to public - burn fireworks only in open spaces

On the occasion of Deepavali, the firefighting department has appealed to the public that it must duly consider the conditions of the senior citizens, children, women, patients, and animals in mind while indulging in burning firecrackers.

In a special appeal, the department reports that Deepavali is being celebrated in the state on 18th October. The firefighting department has initiated a number of precautionary measures to make this Deepavali completely free of any fire-accidents.

Special awareness camps have been conducted in schools, public places, and low dwelling zones (huts) regarding the fire safety aspects. Further, bit-notices, leaflets, and posters have been displayed and distributed to create awareness among the public.

Around 34places likely to be affected by fire-accidents have been identified and a water-container vehicle with firefighting staff along with another lorry container of drinking water have been kept in ‘ready mode’ throughout the 24 hours of the day.

In Chennai Metro city, all the 38 firefighting stations in the city are kept in vigilant mode ready with staff, and vehicles.

Do’s
The public is advised to buy firecrackers only from the shops with the proper licence for selling firecrackers. Especially, the children should burn firecrackers only in the open spaces under the supervision of the elders.

Wear only cotton clothes while burning crackers. Also, wear footwear and protective glasses. In case the clothes catch fire, do not run – pour water immediately and quell the fire or lie down and roll.

Don’ts
  • Do not try to re-light the crackers that did not burn in the 1st try.
  • Do not light crackers, rockets, and flowerpots on hands.
  • Do not burn firecrackers before 6.00 AM and after 10.00 PM.
