Except manufacturer, when someone removes, changes or alters the unique Mobile Device Equipment Identification Number, it will be considered unlawful, says the Department of Telecom in its notification dated 25th August.

This rule is titled as the prevention of tampering of the Mobile Device Equipment Identification Number, Rules, 2017. It bars usage of mobile device in which the IMEI number is changed unlawfully, or when a software that can change is used, or to tamper the unique numbers.

For every mobile handset, the IMEI number is unique.
