In another one year, it is likely that there will be one crore job seekers in Tamil Nadu state employment exchange. As of now, there are over 89 lakh job seekers waiting for government jobs. In one year from now, about 5 lakh job seekers are likely to join and increase the overall count, say sources.

The total number of job offers available with the government is however just 12,000 to 15,000 direct and 1 lakh indirect jobs. On the other hand, with small and medium sized industries, the risk of unemployment and job loss are soaring, affirm official sources.

Main reasons of reduced government job offers
  • Outsourcing government jobs to private sectors
  • Privatizing civic works by local bodies
  • Central government policies
  • Technological advancements
Above are the major reasons for lesser number of job openings with the government. Data in March 2017 state that there were 81,30,025 registrants of which 61 lakh of them are of the age group 18 to 57. A whopping population of this fall below 25 years of age.

State official sources state that the state government has employed 5,802 job seekers through employment offices. Through job fairs, about 20,778 job seekers got placed in private companies, say official sources.

The 2 major concerns of employment
  • Unemployment – though this is wide-spread, the records don’t show them in lime light
  • Underpaid employment – employments offered in toll plazas, petrol bunks, eateries, etc fall under this category.
Sources state that about one crore people are seeking job, however the actual numbers are far beyond. The Centre’s policies pestering the small and tiny sectors, and encouraging foreign trade form the major reason for such unemployment.

Coming on to Tamil Nadu, there are over 3 lakh state government vacancies. About 20 percent of the population in the state are awaiting job and stressed due to employment issues. Neither the centre nor the state has an action plan to solve these issues however.

Though Tamil Nadu stands as a pioneer in educating its population, when it comes to skill development for graduation, it is deficient.

A lot of young graduates who pass out don’t have enough skillsets, especially their skill of communicating. Even engineering pass outs don’t have good communication, say HR executives from leading corporates.

Sectors including IT, BPO, hospitality, manufacturing, etc are affected also due to economic slowdown. This is reduced marginally with the hiring of companies across southern cities like Chennai.
