How Madras originated?
In the year 1996, the city got its name as Chennai. Till then, it was called by the name Madras as believed to have been extracted from the name Madrasapattinam - the then fishing village of Fort St. George. There are other stories behind the name as well – the name is derived out of Madrasan, a fisherman in the city. Though the city has got a name change, we often referred to Madrasis by people from other states in India.

Do you know that your city is touted as the Detroit of India, as Chennai houses a lot of manufacturers: Ford, BMW, Renault Nissan, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Daimler, etc. All these have transformed the city into a prominent automobile hub.
