Today is Aadi Amavasai - crowds throng sacred spots on

Based on the movement of the Sun, the period of the Tamil months Aadi to Margali is known as Dakshinayana Punyakalam (the season to go do good deeds and reap the benefit).

As per the Hindu Almanac/Zodiac, the New Moon Day in the Tamil month of Aadi, known as Aadi Amavasai, when the sun and the moon align. Is considered to be very sacred as per the Hindu mythology and traditions and considered sacred for paying respects to the departed ancestors.

The traditional belief and following are that if individual visits the sacred places like Rameswaram, Kanyakumari, Kodikkarai, Courtallam, and Papanasam and take a dip in the holy waters and pray and offer obeisance to the departed ancestors, he/she will receive all the goodwill and the blessings of the ancestors. The individuals who failed to perform the annual ceremony on the death of the parents, they can better perform the ceremony today – Aadi Amavasai.

So, on this special occasion steeped in historic tradition, huge crowds are thronging all the sacred places to perform the obeisance to the departed ancestors.
