Wind power production upticks, thermal dips

In the recent days, due to increase in production of wind power, the quantum of thermal power generation is substantially reduced at Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (TTPS).
In Tamil Nadu, the wind power energy provided is more than 3,000 MW. This largely contributes to the state’s power demand. It is also a cheaper power production method. Sources say that 2 units of TTPS are used as standby.
On Friday, the fifth unit of 210 MW capacity has suspended generation and on Saturday, the third unit had halted its production.
Upon completing overhauling works, it was on 14th July that the first unit of the wind power plant began with its power generation. Sources say that the 3 other units with 210 MW capacity each are now producing power.
On an average, the daily energy consumption of the state of 14,000 MW to 15,000 MW. This has however come down to 12,500 MW in the past few days, as the weather is moderate without being neither too cold nor too hot.
Generally, July and August are the two peak windy seasons. On 10th July, the power produced at these wind turbines recorded a peak of 2,700 MW under the TANGEDCO’s Tirunelveli Circle of Non-Conventional Energy Source. On Saturday, anyway, the energy dropped to 2,200 MW.
