Mango trade in Tamil Nadu this season - Rs. 6 Crores trading done

The mango traders in Tamil Nadu have informed that trading this season has been more than Rs. 6 Crores.

In Tamil Nadu, mangoes are grown and harvested in large scale in Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Dindigul, and Dharapuram.

Varieties of mangoes including Nedunchalai, Banagolra, Imam Pasand, Banganapalli, Khudadad, Malgova, and Gundu are being grown and harvested.

Generally, the mango trading season peaks during April, May, and June every year.

This season, there was a good growth of mangoes in the above regions and a good harvesting was done. However, this was affected due to the shortage of rains. 5 to 6 tons of mangoes arrived in the Salem market on 1st April.

Usually, 35 to 20 tons of mangoes arrive for sales after 10th May. However, due to the shortage of rain this season, only 18 to 22 tons of mangoes arrived. However, after 25th May, there was an increase in the quantity of mangoes arrival. This continued until 15th June. Presently, the arrival has reduced.

However, the last among the variety of mangoes. Known as neelam, continues arriving even now. The traders informed that this will continue arriving till June end.

Mango traders from Salem explained that there over 50 wholesale mango traders in Salem. The mango season started from the end of March. 4 to 5 tons of mangoes arrived at the time. After 15th April, this increased to 10 tons and continued to rise.

During the last week of May and the month of June, 25 to 30 tons of mangoes arrived in the Salem market.

As compared to last year, the harvest was down by 10% to 15%. In the wholesale trading, 1 kg of mango was sold at Rs. 30 to Rs. 50. The mango price did not come down from the start of the season.

2000 tons of mangoes arrived for the consumers. At the rate of Rs, 30000 per ton, a total trade of 2000 tons for Rs. 6 Crores was done.
