Customers to get Rs 5000 for failure of international SIM cards

Posted on: 15/Jun/2017 12:47:39 PM
For customers who unfortunately meet with service failure during an overseas travel, according to Telecom regulatory Authority TRAI’s recent orders, the telecom network provider (international roaming SIM card and global calling card provider) will owe them a compensation of Rs 5,000.

This compensation of Rs 5,000 is applicable for both prepaid as well as postpaid customers. In case of prepaid connection, the customer will be eligible for complete refund of the amount they have already paid to the mobile network, says suggestion from TRAI.

This TRAI recommendation is applicable to international roaming SIM cards and global calling cards offered by foreign operators functional in India.

Non-activation of service, unable to use the card because of weak network coverage or incompatible handsets, etc are some of the cases when the compensation is recommended.

It is mandatory for the telecom provider to pay the penalty and refund the amount within 15 days of the customers’ return and reporting of non-usage of the network or card. Permits of such companies may also be cancelled when over 10 percent of total international SIM cards they have sold are observed non-functional.

A grievance redressal mechanism is recommended to the international SIM card sellers. An appellate authority should be set up to quickly address the complaints.
