A very rare case of Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia - A Rare Facial Pain Syndrome, was deducted and operated on Mr. Rajendran, 67 year old male at Kauvery Hospital recently.

Addressing the media, Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director, Kauvery Hospital said, Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia is an uncommon facial pain syndrome often misdiagnosed as Trigeminal Neuralgia and it constitutes 0.2 to 1.3% of facial pain syndromes affecting 0.2 to 0.7 / 100000 per year. Swallowing, Chewing, talking, coughing or yawning aggravates this pain episode. Bradycardia/ syncopal episodes can occur in extreme cases. Micro Vascular Decompression Surgery is the treatment option for this in which the offending tortuous vascular loop which is compressing the nerve will be dissected and separated from that Cranial Nerve.

Dr. S. Balamurugan, Neuro Surgeon, Kauvery Hospital who performed this surgery said, Rajendran came to us with acute, severe, stabbing pain around left ear, throat, tongue and near the jaw. MR Angio of Brain has been done for him 4 years back which showed an artery (PICA) compressing the left 9th Cranial nerve near the Brain stem. We identified his problem as Glosspharyngeal Neuralgia and decided to operate. Before surgery, the patient was taking medicines for the past 4 years and only liquid food items, as he could not eat solid food due to severe throbbing pain while chewing and swallowing. In spite of drugs, the intensity of pain was increasing day by day.

He added,  This operation was quite challenging because, some of the complications of this Microvascular decompression (MVD) operation procedure are bleeding, stroke, Dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing), Hoarseness of voice, and Cardiac Arrythmias, but post-surgery, Rajendran responded well and didn’t develop any of these difficulties. He is now completely relieved of pain and can take normal food. In fact, he was discharged the next day of the surgery.
