Tomato price down: Rs. 10 per kg in Koyambedu

With the increased quantities of the arrival of tomato from other places, the price of tomato has come down to Rs. 10 per kg. Among the vegetables grown all over India, tomato stands 1st with a total of 8.23 percent of all vegetables.
In Tamil Nadu, the tomato is grown in Dharmapuri, Vellore, Salem, Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Dindigul, Erode, and Krishnagiri. However, the demand for tomato is more. So, we need to depend on other states like Andhra and Karnataka.
During the last 6 months of 2016, tomato prices had come down to Rs. 10 per kg. However, the price started rising from January 2017. During February, the tomato was sold at Rs. 40 per kg.
Presently, the price of tomato has come down. During 2015 and 2016 April, the price of tomato was Rs. 16 per kg. However, now, during April 2017, it is Rs. 10 per kg.
The president of the tomato traders association explained that during the start of the year, tomato price went up. More quantity of tomato was grown in Andhra and Karnataka. As the current period is the harvesting season, the quantity of tomato arrival has increased. Until now, there were 50 loads. Now, it is 70 loads. So, the tomato is being sold at Rs. 7 to Rs. 10 per kg according to quality.
In Koyambedu market, the prices of other vegetables had gone up – Carrot (Rs. 60 per kg), beans (Rs. 65 per kg), brinjal (Rs. 35 per kg), radish and drumstick (Rs. 25 per kg).
The vice-president of the Koyambedu flower, vegetable, and fruit traders association explained that tomato, potato, and onion are sold at below Rs. 15 per kg. The prices of other vegetables have gone up as the quantity of arrival is less. It is likely the prices may go up in the month of May.
