Today is the birthday of the airplane

On Dec. 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright of Dayton, Ohio, conducted the first successful manned powered-airplane flights near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, using their experimental craft, the Wright Flyer. So today happens to be the birthday of airplane.
The first aircraft was constructed of cloths and wires, with the pilot laying on their stomach to steer and guide the aircraft. It traveled 26 knots, or approximately 30 mph. Wright Flyer is on display in the The Wright Brothers & The Invention of the Aerial Age exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.
