Mind-controlled device for Quadriplegics

Posted on: 08/Dec/2016 4:50:23 PM
Here is a new invention for people suffering out of spinal injuries. It is a mind-controlled robot hand which will be of great help for such people in performing activities such as sipping a cup of tea or using fork to eat. This device was tested on 6 individuals in Spain all of whom are quadriplegic which means their ability to grasp or manipulate objects is restricted.

There is a cap which the user will have to wear. This will keep measuring the brain activity and eye movement and these measures will be sent to tablet computer which in turn controls glove-like device attached to hand.

As compared to performing without the robotic hand, it was far easier to perform using the device, according to the participants involved in the study. This method of using brain controlled device on quadriplegic is not first of its kind. However, most of the existing methods involve the use of implants which may in future lead to health issues or they make use of wet gel for transmitting signals starting from the scalp to the electrodes. Upon finishing usage, the user will have to wash off the hair which is practically impossible.

Participants who earlier found it difficult to perform daily activities without assistance, after trying this device, say this is a reliable and practical method and never complained of any discomfort.
