Special officers appointed to local bodies

The tenure of the representatives of the present local body council came to an end yesterday. The Tamil Nadu State Government has appointed special officers to take care of the administration. The government has issued the government order with regard to this.
 
In Tamil Nadu there are 12 corporations including Chennai, Madurai and Coimbatore, 125 municipalities,  529 town panchayats, 12524 panchayats, 388  panchayat unions and  31 district panchayats. A total of 1, 31,794 representatives including corporation mayors, chairperson and vice-chairperson of municipalities were holding the posts. Their tenure came to an end yesterday.
 
In between, the Madras High Court put on hold the  local body elections in Tamil Nadu. The elections were scheduled to be held in two phases on October 17 and 19. In view of the foregoing, it was necessary to appoint special officers to take care of the administration of the local bodies. On October 19, Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao promulgated two ordinances for appointing special officers to local bodies.
 
According to the Government Order, the Commissioner of City Municipal Corporation would be the special officer for the Corporation as well as for the municipality. In case of town panchayats, the Assistant Director of Town Panchayats and Executive Officers would be the special officers.
 
Block Development Officers have been appointed as special officers for respective village panchayats. As for district panchayats, Additional Director or Additional Collector or Joint Director or Project Director of district rural development agencies, as the case may be, would function as special officers.
 
Assistant Director (Panchayats) and Assistant Director (Audit) would divide the total number of panchayat unions in every district to function as their special officers.
 
All these orders would come into force from today (Tuesday).
