The Chief Engineer of Southern Railway, Mr. Suyambulingam, informed that when the Sethu Canal Projects is taken up, Railways will take the responsibility for exploring whether to construct the Pamban Bridge above the sea level or under the sea.

The rail bridge in the Pamban Sea links the island of Rameswaram to India. This is the 1st bridge built in India. The Pamban bridge is 2.3 km long. This is the 2nd longest bridge in India.

146 pillar columns founded under the sea carry the bridge. 4000 tons of cement were used in the construction of these 146 pillar columns. As it was built by the British Engineer Scherzer, it is named after him. There is a suspension bridge located in the centre of Pamban Bridge.

Pamban Bridge was built in 1914. The project has been taken up in 2 stages to replace all the old iron girders (more than 100 years old) has been in progress in the last 2 years. Rs. 35 Crores have been allotted to renovate the suspension bridge in the centre.

In this scenario, The Railway Chief Safety Commissioner Mr. R. K. Sundaram and Southern Railway Chief Engineer (Bridges) Mr. Suyambulingam inspected the bridge under renovation.

Mr. R. K. Sundaram had a session with the press reporters.Though 102 years have passed, the Pamban Bridge continues to be strong.

The suspension bridge in the centre can be operated manually. However, the new suspension bridge will be machine-operated. With this mechanisation, the time taken for lifting the bridge either side will reduce from 30 minutes to 5 minutes.
