More about IoT

Posted on: 13/Feb/2016 6:07:46 PM
A new technology called IoT, or Internet of Things, is slowly taking hold. Here, electronic devices can communicate with each other, making things much simpler than they already are. Physical objects and devices such as gadgets, home appliances, vehicles, buildings, etc. are connected to a network. This network may be a local hotspot, or the general internet.

Once connected, the devices can update themselves by getting information from the electronic environment. They will also be able to communicate with devices outside the network. For example, devices such as the refrigerator can shop for food when low on stock, or the washing machine can be switched on or off from your smartphone, even when you are out of your house.

Some experts, however, feel that these super smart devices can be a threat. As each of them are controlled through the internet, it is highly susceptible to hackers. For example, your smartphone`s or laptop`s speaker or camera may be switched on without your knowledge, and stream information to someone else.

A recent report has said that officials from intelligence agencies in the US will soon use IoT as spy tools. Unfortunately, this may create chaos across the globe. Says the report, Clapper (a senior official with the US national intelligence) addressed two different committees on Tuesday - the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Committee - and for the first time suggested that the Internet of Things could be weaponised by governments.

According to intelligence experts, these synced smart devices are helpful to the environment as well as they save on energy, while improving efficiency.
