How to alleviate exam stress

Posted on: 06/Feb/2016 10:02:07 AM
Exam anxiety is felt by children and parents alike. As parents, you must take extra care to help your child cope with the stress. Says a parent, I realised I was passing on my anxiety to my son, which would frustrate him. So much so, each time he would find me getting anxious, he would tell me, mama, please go chant. Here are a few ways you could handle the stress.

First and foremost, stay calm. Showing stress doesn`t help. In cases like this, the child may turn into a complete rebel, may not study deliberately or get more nervous and not perform well. A well known psychologist says, Children often get exasperated, if parents continuously tell them what to do and how to do it. This not only disturbs them, but also leaves a feeling of anxiety and insecurity regarding the upcoming exams. They may lose their confidence.

Remember that times have changed. Don`t apply old school thoughts to the current say. A teacher says, When I was preparing for my boards more than a decade ago, everyone was concerned about marks. But we now realise that these marks don`t matter. If we are kinder towards exams, exams will be kinder to us. Besides, those who do well in school may not necessarily do well in life, and the reverse is also true. So, don`t base your child`s self-worth based on these exams.

In the same vein, a psychologist says, One is 15 or 16 when appearing for these exams, and parents must understand they have a whole life ahead of them. Doing poorly in an exam is not a sign that they are a failure in life.

Another thing to remember is that you are not giving the exams. Do not put your life on hold for your child`s exams. Instead, be a support system. Make things comfortable and easy for your child to study. Ensure that your child is sleeping well, eating properly and exercising regularly. These help alleviate stress levels. Do not nag them to study. Learning happens best when the child is relaxed and rested. Says a psychologist, And know that exams are a bit about luck. If your child has studied diligently and is still unable to perform for some reason, spare the rod.

Speaking about this, a paediatrician said, Many parents feel anxious when their children don`t seem to juggle their time well or are a tad tired towards the end of the examination. This is bound to happen in some cases as children have been running to different classes and have been solving umpteen number of papers and have been practising a lot. Know that your child has a limit and will only able to perform to the best of his/her ability. Accept their limitations. As a thumb rule don`t compare, not even if their sibling is a class topper. Avoid talking to too many people on your WhatsApp groups about what to serve your children, where to seek last minute help, ask how much children must sleep. Trust the children and observe what is best for them as every child is different.
