One More Suburban Railway Line

Soon, commuters travelling in crowded trains between Tambaram and Chengalpet stations may get some respite. A sum of Rs 300 crore is allotted by the railway board. This is meant for setting up the third line from Tambaram to Chengalpet. With this, more suburban trains will be functioned from Chennai to Chengalpet.
 
A 30 km project was submitted to the railway board an year ago for approval, say southern railway officials. Now, the funds are sanctioned and the work will be started upon floating tenders. Officials add that the new lines will be set up in three years from now.
 
Chengalpet, located at a distance of 55km from Chennai is a fast growing satellite town that receives thousands of people every day. Presently, four lines are functioning between Chennai and Tambaram. Out of these, two are long distant trains and other tow are suburban trains.
 
Out of 120 suburban services from Chennai beach, only 35 head to Chengalpet which is nearly one fourth of the total count. Each of these trains has got a capacity of 3000 and heads to Chennai beach.
 
The frequency of these trains to Chengalpet during peak hours is one train in twenty minutes, whereas the trains to Tambaram runs at a frequency of one in ten minutes.
 
Once the new line gets read, twenty more trains will be functioning, say officials. Chengalpet is a major junction in the corridor of Chennai-Vilupuram. Many students at the SRM university in Katankulathur make use of trains between Tambaram and Chengalpet.

Furthermore, it is the fastest mode of transportation for professionals traveling to Chennai from residential colonies like Maraimalai Nagar, Urapakkam and Guduvanchery.
