Wind forecast to tap more power

Posted on: 28/Aug/2015 4:09:34 PM
Tamil Nadu stands as one of the largest producers of wind energy. The state has a capacity of over 7800 MW installed in it for this renewable power. Now, as a new move to make maximum benefit out of this resource, a new wind power forecasting service is being utilized by the state. The output obtained from these wind farms are subject to changes just like weather. Hence this cannot be relied on as the sole source of power.

This flaw can anyhow be rectified if we make it possible to estimate the energy beforehand which can make it effective to manage. To serve this purpose, a new prediction system is developed by the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) in collaboration with Vortex Factoria De Calcul SL which is a company based in Spain. This requires availability based tariff (ABT) meters at the wind energy pooling substations. These meters are so far set up at about eighty substations in the state. Forty more substations will get the same by the end of this month, said NIWE scientists.

This system will keep providing the forecast for every fifteen minutes by ten days well in advance. This forecast will be used by the TANGEDCO to schedule and dispatch electricity from wind turbine generators. The institute is targeting to provide precise results and services that are customizable and cost-effective, as the wind season is on (May to October). This will be an indication of the level of energy available and with this, distribution can be scheduled on the thermal stations that supply about 8000 MW out of the total 14,000 MW which is the total requirement of the state.

ABT meters are set up in wind energy pooling substations that bridges wind turbines placed within a radius of 10 km, said K Boopathi, the head o wind resources.
