According to a study report, it is found that one-third of the overall world population is overweight. This includes 37 per cent men and 38 per cent women. The report was published in Bulletin of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Between the years 1980 and 2013, number of adult men with BMI of 25kg/m2 and above increased from 28.8 per cent to 36.9 per cent, whereas in women, the same increase was from 29.8 per cent to 38 per cent, says report. In general, a person is called obese if he or she has 30 and above as BMI.

The research has found that there is a significant increase in the total number of people who overweight which is obviously due to the increase in consumption of high calorie food items.

The lead author of the research said there are several factors that have changed in the past decade. To name a few: increase in urbanization, dependence on car, sedentary occupations, etc. However, owing to oversupply of high calorie items, there is over consumption that leads to weight gain in most countries.
