Work to resume at the Porur Flyover

Posted on: 03/Jun/2015 11:23:51 AM
The location of a  600m long and 1.5m Metro water pipe has been holding up construction of the Porur flyover for more than a year and because of this motorists have long been complaining that crossing the Porur junction at the intersection of Mount Poonamallee Road and Arcot Salai during peak hour is a big problem. Apart from this, there is also traffic congestion.

Shifting pipes is complicated as water supply has to be cut off. So the department is changing the design of the foundation. The pier will be on either side of the pipe. This will increase the quantity of the concrete to be used. The Highways department has presently laid service lanes and constructed storm water drains near the flyover whose construction is likely to resume. The work had been put on hold after just 10 per cent of work on the four-lane, 475-m long, 17.2-m wide flyover was completed.

The design changes and hold-up has led to an increase in costs. The flyover which originally cost Rs. 34.72-crore will now cost over Rs. 50 crore. The work is expected to commence soon and will be completed very soon.
