New digital meters increases revenue to TANGEDCO

Posted on: 20/Mar/2015 11:25:02 AM
The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) have replaced more than one crore conventional meters by digital meters. This had also increased the revenue. So far the electricity consumption was calculated using Electro Mechanical Meters. Few years back in order to calculate the consumption accurately, digital or static system was introduced.

Officials of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation have mentioned, “2.3 Crore meters have been installed in all residential and commercial establishments except agriculture and slum areas. Now 1.1 Crore new meters have been replaced. Digital meters are being installed for new connections.”

The official said when compared to conventional meters, digital meters minimize possibilities of pilferage of energy through tampering, have more accurate recording of energy consumption and do not get appreciably affected by mechanical and magnetic disturbances.

Besides, electro mechanical meters do not record energy if consumed in very small quantities and old meters start running slowly due to moving components in the meter getting worn out.

Many consumers are also not aware that some equipment like television, and DVD players, when switched off through remote controls, continue to consume energy unless they are switched off from the switch mounted on the equipment itself.
