Passive Facebook usage puts you depressed, study

According to new study report, surfing through others’ profile on Facebook, and scrolling through the News Feed is likely to put you depressed and envious.

The study involved researching the difference in the impact that Facebook has among active and passive users. Those who are passive users of Facebook were found to show signs of declination in how they feel over time, more importantly about their feel of envy towards others.

Most users of Facebook are found to be passive rather than being active. While passive usage means to scroll through other profiles and pages, active stands for making posts on one’s own wall, commenting on posts, or liking pages which certainly has no implication.

According to Ethan Kross, University of Michigan associate professor of psychology, the senior author of the study, this study greatly helps in illuminating the way in which Facebook impacts one’s feel. The study involved assessing the usage of 80 undergraduate students. They were made to use Facebook actively for ten minutes in a controlled lab environment. When they were made to use it passively, they were left with significant worse feel. This wasn’t the reaction with active Facebook users.
