Heavy downpour in midnight

Last Sunday night Chennaites were surprised to see heavy showers accompanied by lightning and thunder.
The rain flooded the city`s streets with most residential colonies and roads being inundated. The fire and rescue services department control room operators said they did not receive any major emergency call till 12.45 am and were on alert to respond to any situation.
The Met office said the showers were convectional rainfall caused when hot air with heavy moisture rises and condenses, resulting in sudden short spells of rain. It is raining in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts, a Met official said at 1am. We expect the intensity of the showers to wane in an hour or so.
