A Mylapore temple has banned plastic items inside the temple premises. The devotees are asked to transfer the contents to a bamboo basket and also given a token. After the archana the token is got back along with the basket.

Temple goers across the state may soon need to ensure that they don`t take pooja materials in a plastic bag. Plastic has been banned from temples administered by the government, and temple authorities have started implementing the ban. Devotees with plastic bags will be stopped outside the temple and the contents transferred to a bamboo basket or cloth bag. Only after this he or she will be allowed into the temple.

The ban was implemented initially in Chennai, Madurai and Thanjavur. In Chennai, the ban is in vogue in Kapaleeswarar, Tiruverkadu and Vadapalani temples. In Thanjavur, the ban has been enforced in the Big Temple, a Unesco heritage site,

Apart from implementing the ban on the temple premises, the authorities have also asked the municipal and other local bodies to enforce the ban around the temples.

In Kapali temple alone, more than 500 baskets have been donated by a devotee for this purpose.

In the coming days, the temples will also have sign boards asking people to shun plastics.
