Allocation of Rs. 5,284 Crores for Power Infrastructure Intensification

During the assembly meet on Thursday, Chief Minister J Jayalalitha has informed that the Tamil Nadu government will expend Rs 5,284 Crores on intensification of power distribution and transmission infrastructure.

Creating the suo motu statement, she mentioned that 60 new sub-stations and 2,500 km of high-tension transmission lines would be formed. 

At a cost of Rs 338.08 Crores, two more 230 KV sub-stations would be instituted at West Mambalam and Porur in Chennai, so as to hold up the power infrastructure across Chennai.

Consequently, a 400 KV sub-station would be propped up at Kamudhi in Ramanathapuram district and Muthuramalingapuram in Virudunagar district each at a cost of Rs. 435.50 Crores and Rs. 47.51 Crores respectively. Further, these new sub-stations would uplink the generated solar power to the State grid.

During the assembly meet, chief minister said that so as to intensify the power distribution arrangements, during this financial year, a fund of Rs 660 Crores will be allotted to procure and install 28,000 transformers.

Also, for the renovation and promotion of the installation capacity of the two units of Sholayar Hydro Electric Project Phase I, a sum of Rs 120 Crores was allotted. Moreover, she mentioned that the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) would get the poise from 2015-16.

Currently, the first unit of Kudankulam project was yielding 562 MW and as per the plan the second unit would start its commercial production of 463 MW by this year end. Similarly, two units of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation would begin its production of 230 MW in this fiscal year.
