Ripon Building to be white in colour

Posted on: 31/Jul/2014 9:22:49 AM
City Corporation’s Ripon Buildings will be seen in white after nearly two years. Officials earlier were in a dilemma on whether to choose white or off-white and had even daubed sections of two adjacent pillars in the two shades.

More than Rs 18 crore has been utilized to restore the historic Indo-Saracenic structure built in 1913.

More than 80% of the work is complete and the new deadline for the inauguration is December. Restoration of the landmark building began in 2009 and missed three deadlines, including its 100th anniversary last year.

Experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), part of the committee overseeing the restoration, say such delays are bound to happen when a heritage structure is restored.

Work on the clock tower, dome, exterior of the building`s south side, its original entrance, the western front and half of its eastern front has been completed. Applying the coat of primer is expected to be completed in a month with a device that can spray paint across the 85m long and 32m wide rectangular structure is being used.

The lime-based paint is being made at the site by traditional masons.

The renovated building is expected to be opened along with the new five storey annexe coming up on the premises.
