According to a study by Soundarapandian Bone and Joint Hospital, 90% of women between the ages of 20 and 60 who came to the hospital were suffering from Vitamin D deficiency. Doctors attribute this to the women shielding themselves from the sun that lets out the much needed nutrient. Vitamin D is essential to keep arthritis and osteoporosis at bay.

Even women as young as 20 come to our hospital complaining of joint and back pain. We conducted this study for around six months and found that of 1, 200 women, 90 per cent had Vitamin D deficiency. Sunlight is available all through the day in our city but most  of these women did not have enough exposure to I, said orthopedic surgeon Dr. Sivamurugan. As parathyroid glands control the bone metabolism, Vitamin D deficiency can also lead to hyperparathyroidism. Women (must) have adequate milk, buttermilk, fish, cauliflower and beans which are a good source of the vitamin and go out for walks between 6.30 and 7 am to keep in good health.
