Guess where might be the last train stop in Chennai for the next 6 months?

Just recently, Southern Railways or SR took many by surprise when it announced that MRTS services between Chennai Beach and to Chepauk would be suspended to help the construction works. Till December 2023, the local trains would be operated only between Velachery and Chepauk as it would take 6 months to construct a new railway line along the Velachery- Beach stretch in Chennai.

Now, for the next 6 months, MTC or Metropolitan Transport Corporation wants Chintadripet to be the last train stop. According to a senior officer from MTC, it would be difficult to divert several buses to  Chepauk. He revealed that if Chintadripet was made the last stop then there would be hundreds of buses that would help the passengers reach Broadway which is the nearest transit hub.

By walking some 100 m, the commuters would also be able to get into the buses (at Simpson bus stop) plying along the route numbers 17E (Saligramam to Broadway) and 27B (Koyambedu to Marina). The passengers would be able to easily reach Central railway station and Anna Square etc.

The practical issues present in making Chintadripet as the last stop was highlighted by the Southern Railways. According to a senior officer from SR, it was clear that Chepauk has a facility for the  trains to switch tracks and return but Chintadripet was present on a slope. To address this problem, CUMTA would be taking part in a meeting.

It is learnt that the passengers have asked SR to provide them with share autos or bike taxis etc just similar to CMRL. It was brought out by a resident from Velachery that accessing the Egmore railway station after 7pm would be very difficult as the connectivity now is likely to get cut. The reason was at that time only many south bound express trains would start leaving Egmore.
